Irmo residents are coming together to honor the life of Bill Blume, who passed away recently at the age of 81. Known for his unwavering service to the community and his deep love for family, Blume’s legacy will be commemorated at a service held at Saint Andrews Presbyterian Church on May 22 at 2 p.m., with visitation beginning one hour earlier.
Born on February 5, 1942, in Columbia, South Carolina, Bill was the son of the late Edward and Clementine Blume. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Kay Blume, who was his high school sweetheart. Blume is survived by his daughter, Kim Folsom, and her husband, Eddie; his son, Bill Blume, Jr., and his wife, Sheri; as well as five cherished grandchildren, Ashley Melia, Lauren Ely, Savannah Sirois, Regan Blume, and Liam Blume. His great-granddaughter, Sophie Kay Melia, also holds a special place in the family. He is additionally survived by his brother, Stewart Blume, and sister-in-law, Carol.
Blume graduated from Dreher High School in 1960 before serving his country in the U.S. Air Force and the Naval Reserve. He later pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from the University of South Carolina College of Business. Following that, he attained his Certified Public Accountant (CPA) credentials and made a significant impact as the Accounting Director for the South Carolina Public Service Commission.
Beyond his professional achievements, Blume developed a passion for teaching at Midlands Technical College, where he inspired countless students with his knowledge and dedication. His ability to connect with others and share his expertise was a hallmark of his teaching career.
Bill Blume was not only a dedicated professional; he was also a man known for his profound love of family and friends. Throughout his life, he was famous for his sense of humor, quick wit, and kind heart, traits that endeared him to many. He valued hard work, yet always made time for the people he loved.
His culinary skills were particularly noted, especially his delicious homemade lemon meringue pies, which became a family favorite. Blume also loved capturing moments with his family through photography and enjoyed making milkshakes for his grandchildren—a small but cherished activity that created lasting memories.
Blume’s faith played a pivotal role in his life. He was a long-standing member and Deacon at Saint Andrews Presbyterian Church, where he found community and purpose. Guided by his spiritual beliefs, he embodied the values of love, kindness, and service.
In addition to his professional and family commitments, Bill found joy in various hobbies. He loved vacationing in Hilton Head Island, running, listening to classic music, dancing, and reading. Each of these interests contributed to the well-rounded individual he was, fostering connections and deepening relationships within his community.
The Blume family expresses their gratitude to the staff at Westminster Memory Care in Lexington and Agape Hospice for their exceptional support during his final days. The family encourages all who knew Bill to join them in celebrating a life well-lived.
