Duke Energy Infrastructure in South Carolina

News Summary

Duke Energy, under Tim Pearson’s leadership, is enhancing South Carolina’s energy infrastructure while advocating for sustainable growth through diverse energy solutions. The company emphasizes reliability and has made significant investments to bolster grid resilience following Hurricane Helene’s power outages. Duke Energy supports legislative efforts like House Bill 3309 to prepare for future energy demands. Their initiatives promote energy conservation and community engagement, with investments aimed at modernization and workforce development, highlighting their commitment to a sustainable energy future in South Carolina.

South Carolina is at the forefront of energy innovation as Duke Energy’s President Tim Pearson outlines the company’s strategy for fulfilling the state’s energy needs. Duke Energy serves approximately 835,500 electric retail customers and 164,000 natural gas customers in the state, emphasizing the importance of reliability and affordability in their operations.

Tim Pearson is responsible for the financial performance of Duke Energy’s regulated utilities in South Carolina, and his role encompasses leading efforts in regulatory and government relations as well as community affairs. Having joined Duke Energy full-time in 2023 after a decade of experience in government and policy, including advising South Carolina governors, Pearson aims to enhance the economic vitality of local communities through reliable energy solutions.

One significant concern highlighted by Duke Energy is the recent impact of Hurricane Helene, which resulted in over 1.34 million power outages, affecting more than 99% of Duke Energy’s Upstate customers. The company has since learned valuable lessons on improving grid resilience and has made substantial infrastructure investments to prepare for such extreme weather events in the future.

Reflecting on South Carolina’s energy future, Pearson emphasized the pressing need for ongoing legislative efforts to address new generation capacity. Duke Energy is actively supporting House Bill 3309, which seeks to prepare the state for sustainable energy growth by advocating for an “all of the above” energy strategy. This approach includes diversifying energy sources by incorporating hydrogen-capable natural gas, solar, battery storage, and potential nuclear options.

In alignment with these goals, Duke Energy has implemented infrastructure improvements designed to bolster reliability. This includes initiatives such as tree trimming, pole upgrades, and the introduction of self-healing technology, which incredibly prevented approximately 130,000 customer outages in South Carolina in 2024 alone.

Duke Energy is also focusing on customer engagement through demand-response programs, allowing customers to utilize smart devices for energy conservation. These programs provide financial incentives for reducing electricity use during peak demand, ultimately fostering a more responsive and efficient energy landscape.

Renewal and modernization underpin Duke Energy’s broader operational goals. Serving 8.6 million electric customers and 1.7 million natural gas customers across multiple states, the company has committed to energy transition initiatives that prioritize cleaner generation methods, including natural gas, nuclear, and renewable resources. They are also making significant investments—over $10 billion in grid resiliency and storm hardening over three years—to adapt to increasingly severe weather conditions.

Another area of focus is workforce development, particularly through Duke Energy’s partnership with GE Vernova, which aims to secure new gas turbines to meet future energy demands while fostering local job creation and infrastructure development. Additionally, the Duke Energy Foundation has allocated over $2 million since 2021 to combat hunger and support community initiatives, further solidifying its commitment to local issues.

As the conversation around South Carolina’s energy landscape evolves, Duke Energy’s proactive strategies appear focused on addressing immediate concerns while preparing for a sustainable and innovative energy future. With an emphasis on collaboration with community leaders and a commitment to incorporating varied energy solutions, Duke Energy is positioning itself as a key player in the state’s energy ecosystem.
